Tribute & Message From The Family

Pickens - Irene Elizabeth Simmons Porter Holton passed peacefully in her sleep to go home to her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 12, 2013, at the age of 84. A loving mother and grandmother, she was a blessing to all who knew her.

Born in Greenville County on October 22, 1928, a daughter of the late Isham Elijah and Iola Epps Simmons, she also enjoyed living in Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia as well as South Carolina. Irene was a gifted artist, open to adventure, and faced each chapter of her life with a cheerful and optimistic spirit. She valiantly dealt with adversity such as arthritis, loss of vision, loss of loved ones, and over 8 years on dialysis, without losing faith, hope or her ability to remain joyful and encouraging. A member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church in Easley, Irene was previously a member of the Church of God in Alma, GA and the Church of God in Winter Garden, FL.

Irene is survived by her son Allan (Cynthia) Porter of Easley, daughter Gina (James) Kern of Henrietta, NY, daughter-in-law Inez Hoffman Porter; grandchildren Richard Yates, Candice Yates, Robin (Rob) Porter Stutz, James Kern, Thomas Kern, Anthony (Ashley) Howell, and Matthew Howell, great grandchildren Shawn Yates, Austin Yates, Regan Gregory, and Ashton Stutz, great great grandson Bryson Yates, brother Jerry (Jane) Simmons of Simpsonville, sister Merle Mason of Pickens, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Bill (William) Holton, ex-husband Wayne Porter, son Richard Porter and sisters Pearl Lewis and Jean Breazeale.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Dillard Funeral Home. Services will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with her nephew Rex Simmons officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.
